Fairy toys for holiday joys

International Fairy Day 2023 is set for Saturday the 24th of June. Why have an international holiday? To share the wonderment of these beloved characters. Fairies and fairy-like creatures are found in various cultures around the world, and feature in stories to teach morals through wonder and whimsy. Most fairy tales shared with children come from the European Renaissance period, but don’t stop there. Be sure to learn about other wonderful stories from other countries with rich cultures.

Other popular names for fairies include the spelling variations faery/ faerie/ faerie/ faërie/ færie. Fairies have also at times been interchanged with the names sprites and pixies. Some familiar names that are also a part of the fairy world include their friends – dwarves, gnomes, brownies, kelpies, leprechauns, imps and elves.

Tips on transforming into a fairy or fairy friend

First things first, little fairies need to look the part. Now – not all fairies look alike. Some like to blend into their surroundings (like gardens, woodlands, or waterways). Others like to celebrate life in technicolour with shiny, reflective goodies. Little ones can choose to wear their lucky hat or favourite colour, vest or tutu. We carry fun fairy costumes like our Fairy Tutu Skirts in purple, white and pink.

Next – it’s important to wear accessories. Fairies are all about celebrating their environment and wearing the things that make them happy. Pick a flower and put it behind their ear, or adorn them with some decorations. Choose from our Crystal Stickers or the Girls Butterfly / Flower Makeup Set.

Lastly, little fairies must channel their inner magic and power. This comes from being mindful, caring, creative and clever– and sometimes with a pinch of humorous mischief.

Fairies are known for helping out others and working together with their animal and insect friends. (And sometimes, they assist nearby humans when in need). Get your little sprites involved with watering the garden, collecting fallen leaves, and filling the bird feeder. Be sure to look out for ladybugs or inchworms that need help getting back to a safe place.

Fun activity ideas

Craft a fairy crown

Nothing quite celebrates the happiness of being a fairy, like a flower crown does. We found this guide on how to make fairy crowns from the available flowers in your backyard. Or, to make something a little more durable and reusable, recreate these woodland crowns.

Make a fairy garden

One of the joys of celebrating fairies is also getting little ones to commune with nature. This is a great chance to grow some herbs, bring blossoming colour into the garden and get creative designing a world of miniatures. Plus, it’s like an outdoor doll house or diorama kiddies young and old will enjoy building with the help of these DIY steps. Get them to collect fun trinkets like pebbles, shells, marbles and figurines to bring a personal touch to the space.

Host a fairy picnic

Think bubbles, flowers, toadstools, backyard wildlife and a whole lot of whimsy. Set up a blanket or raised surface with our fruity- or animal-themed Metal Tea Set to serve cookies, little sandwiches, cut fruit, nuts and berries, and sweets. And don’t forget honey! Honey is a standard treat for fairies everywhere – perfect for scones and buttered toast. For an extra treat, bring along a guest, like the Little Fairy Doll, with her little bag.
